Heinkel Flugzeugwerke was founded in 1922 after the restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles were relaxed. During WW2 Heinkel provided the Luftwaffe with Germany's only heavy bomber, the He 177. Although quite innovative, politics limited development until near the end of the war when it developed the fastest piston twin, and the He 162 Volksjager, a simple and quick early jet fighter. Both arrived too late to make a difference.
